source volume could not be locked 640

Hi
Using ghost32.exe (11.5).

I want to be able image a HDD running win server 2003 while it is running.
I've tried running ghost32.exe from explorer with file on the network or local and each time, each server errors with these errors:  "source volume could not be locked 640" & "Could not create a snapshot of the volume (756)"

XP is no problem  if I click "volume snapshot"

Other programs like Drive Image XML and SelfImage do backup, but we have always used ghost and are not sure about the reliability of these.  The bottom line is we need a dirt cheap solution to save images live and restore from UBCD or other CD easily.  We already own ghost.

As you running ghost right on the top of working OS there are other system processes and services that might be preventing ghost from locking the volume. You have to either boot up server from bootable media and image volume this way or dismount the volume by using command "fsutil volume dismount C". Anyway your server operations will be disrupted.
Hope it helps

I'm wondering why this would be necessary since other clone software completes without dismounting C.  Also this version of ghost completes on XP would dismounting C.  I believe it something to do with VSS that may be implemented differently on 2003

Right now about the only thing we could probably afford is DriveImage XML (a 5 "user" license for $100)  Let's you schedule live backups, but was hoping I could overcome this issue with ghost which we already own before spending the time to get to know all the pros and cons of a new product.

Try to run ghost with the parameter: ghost32.exe -forcevolumesnapshot
Otherwise, bootup from WinPE or DOS and make image from there.

I did some extensive testing with DriveImage XML and Bart-PE and found it to be a good alternative

The fsutil volume dismount <drive letters> worked for me.  There may be some relation to something on the utility/recovery partition on my Dell workstations so I dismounted both drives and things proceeded normally with Ghost 8
