Outlook Express problems

A friend of mine teaches in the public school system and they use Outlook Express - Microsoft Outlook Web Access, as the school system's email system. In their email, once you delete an item you have to go to the deleted folder to delete it again. Then you have to go to the Options folder and tell it to either Recover Item(s) or Permanently Delete Item(s).

He has been trying for weeks now to Permanently Delete all (or any) items in the Options Deleted Items folder, but he can't delete them. He gets the error message, "An error occurred while deleting the objects. Some of the objects may not be deleted." He gets this message whether he is trying to delete one email or all of the emails in this folder. The public schools' I.T. person has been to the school on several occasions trying to get the items deleted, but he has been unable to delete them.

I decided to experiment a while ago and deleted some items from his inbox; then I deleted the items from the deleted folder; then I went to the Options folder and I was able to permanently delete the items that I just deleted. So I am now assuming that his being unable to delete the 6 pages of emails in that folder must have something to do with how long the emails have been in this folder. However, according the school's I.T. person, this should have nothing to do with it.

Anyway... my question to you is, do you know how in the world he can delete these 6 pages of emails permanently? The I.T. person for the school system said they could not delete them from the server b/c it is against state law for them to do so.

His email account was frozen b/c his total email size was in excess of the maximum allowed by the school system per teacher. As I said earlier, I was able to delete 5 or 6 emails a while ago from the inbox, then from the deleted items folder and then from the Options - permanently delete folder. That freed up some space so now he is able to send and receive mail, but it's just a matter of time (less than days) before he is back in the same situation.

I'm sorry this is so long, but I just wanted to give you all the information I could that might help you figure out what is going on and how to get rid of all those emails in the Options - Permanently Delete folder.

Have you tried selecting the message and holding down the shift key while pressing delete, then saying yes to the instruction, do you want to permanently delete? That bypasses the moving to the delete folder.

I just tried your suggestion - holding down the shift key while pressing delete and all that did was open a new blank browser window. The items I'm trying to delete are the items that have already been deleted from the inbox; then deleted from the trash can; then they are automatically moved to the Options folder - deleted items. These are the emails I'm trying to delete now.

Kenniebee--I have no experience with a Outlook Express - Microsoft Outlook Web Access system, but messages in a normal OE Deleted Items folder (and even those deleted from the Deleted Items folder) are not deleted until you compact the Deleted Items folder.  When the Deleted Items folder is open, OE File|Folder|Compact .

Thanks, but this is through a browser; not a stand-alone application so I don't have the option of File, folder, compact. I feel sure that the emails could be deleted from the server by the I.T. folks at the central office, but according to him it is against NC law for them to delete other employees' emails. So... it's a catch-22 situation. I'm at my wit's end, but at this point I really don't know any way to do it other than the I.T. guru downtown to delete them, and he won't. So what are the options???

Kenniebee--Again in normal OE, (in Tools|Accounts|Properties|Advanced tab) I can tell the website's server to delete messages I have deleted from the Deleted Items folder, or to delete any message from the server after X days.  I have no idea how you would do that or how that fits your state's law.

Thank you so much for trying to help me. I can not locate a Tools link anywhere. I can't find Accounts, Properties, or Advanced Tab either. I wonder if this is a watered down version of email since it's web based and through a public school system. I'm going to attach a couple of screen shots of what I'm seeing. Maybe you can tell me where to go to find the tools link - if there is one. Again, thank you sooooo much for your help!

Kenniebee--As mentioned I do not have any experience with Outlook Web Access.  And now that you have posted the screen shot I can see that it is unlikely you are using Outlook Express which has been the basis for my posts so far.  It does not seem Outlook is involved either--at least not the Outlook Toolbar.

If that does not fix things, have you tried clicking the Help button on the Toolbar shown in your screenshot?  Use the Index tab to hunt for info on deleting messages or "emptying the deleted files folder".

Thank you again so so much! I will check out the links you provided. I have checked out the help button and all that says it to go to the options folder to delete the items remaining in there. lolol Jeez! The "Help" button is really no help at all. lolol

We were never able to resolve this issue. I think it will have to be fixed at the server level. Thanks to everyone.
