Cannot install Windows FAX Services in Windows XP Pro SP3

Hi all,
There's a customer's computer that is used, among other things, as a FAX receiver for his radio station. I had the computer setup with a simple USB modem that took care of picking up the phone and receiving faxes.
Today, a month after a major medical emergency, the FAX services in that computer stopped working, and cannot be re-installed. The only thing done differently so far was that someone else was running the station while the regular guy was gone.

I tried reinstalling but I got an error code "0x4b8".
After some search on google, I tried this: "esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb"
Now the installation wizard works fine, but in the end I still don't have the FAX services installed. In fact, when I go into services.msc, the FAX service shows up as "Shutting Down" and "Marked for Deletion"
One thing that I noticed is that under "Start Menu\Accessories\Communications\", instead of the folder Fax, i get this:  "@%systemroot%\system32\fxres.dll,-118"

I bought a new modem today just to make sure it wasn't the modem that was fried, but I still get the same thing. Even though the previous modem was able to simply call my cellphone.

Thanks for the help.

Have you tried a third party fax program yet?

Here are a couple free programs you can use:

I haven't, but I have WinFAX Pro 10. I'll give that a try.

Ok cool, let me know how it works out. Third party software is better than any windows built-in software anyway in my opinion :-)

Installed WinFAX 10 today, still using the old modem. Everything works just fine...
But I'd still like to know why the windows fax service would just fail like that.

How does one phrase this correctly...
Perfect solution without actually having to solve the initial problem?
Oh well, the customer's happy, the fax works... Fine by me.

Well in my personal opnion the reason for its failure would be:

Because its Windows... Microsoft applications in windows and windows itself constantly give problems. Its possible the apllication got corrupted. I'm not a fan at all really of Windows nor Microsoft to be brutally honest but I still use it and make due because I can't write my own OS and I haven't found a Linux distro yet that supports all windows games, movies and music.

Glad I could help :)
