Microsoft Exchange Archive Information Backup Issues

At the moment Microsoft Exchange enforces a 75GB limit, which results in many users within various organisations, archiving old emails to a local .pst file on the hard disk.

However in many situations this information is still valuable and because .pst files cannot be stored on a file server, some additional backup procedure has to be implemented in order to backup perhaps 10-30 pst files on 10-30 individual computers!

Is there no better option available, so that all important email data can still be backed up centrally?

PST files have no place in a corporate environment. As stated, there is no easy route to access them across a network and as such, no easy way to back them up.

Precautions can usually be taken to reduce the size of a 75GB without requiring any special measures or archiving software. Educating users that Exchange is not a file storage system can often reduce the database size in a heavily used system somewhat; large attachments should be archived to a file share, and not stored in Exchange.

If these preventative measures cannot reduce the amount of data stored in Exchange, look into some form of mail archiving tool. GFI MailArchiver (http://www.gfi.com/mailarchiver/) or Symantec Enterprise Vault (http://www.symantec.com/business/enterprise-vault) are the products I recommend to my clients for longer term storage of older mail.
