Hi,

I have to perform a Full Backup of a Server Everyday at 00:30 onto a attached Quantum SDLTII Tape Library attached via ISCSI.  It's only has one drive in it so i have not installed the Tape Library Option.

There is only around 50gb of data to be backup up at the moment but i want the backup to use a new tape each day and overwrite it.  This will allow for data growth too.

There will be 7 tapes loaded each week.  How do I configure the backup job so that it uses a new tape each day.

in arcserve backup manager, once you select the source data and the tape device group in destination.. go to 'schedule' tab

choose 'use rotation scheme'
choose the scheme '7-day weekly full backup'
set the time
specifcy a media pool name
submit!

the rotation scheme, by using media pools, will ensure that each days tape is written to only after 7 days.

i think thats what you need.

Would the 7-day Weekly Full Backup Rotation work for the attached Backup Rotation Cycle.

in your attachment i see you have tapes 1-31 which you want to be 're-used' only a month later.
in that case you need to increase the 'retention time(in days)' for the media pool to 30 days.
this can be done via quickstart.. media pools.. properties of the media pool (which the job created upon submit)

and for your monthly tapes - create a separate job with custom schedule to run on last sunday of each month.

Note: for your daily job - add exeptions for it not to run on the last sunday of the month

I think it would be easier to do a custom job that runs a full backup daily.  I just want it to load a new tape and overwrite it.

The same tape will be used a month later on a different day therefore the backup won't run if I use a Rotation Scheme.  Correct me if I'm wrong, you can only reuse the tapes on the same day. e.g. Monday Tape on a Monday.

I've modifed the Backup Cycle to reflect the '7-day weekly full backup'.  Also the same tape will be used on the same day at a later date.

there is no pre-condition that a tape labelled 'monday' will be used on monday.

as per the retention time, the tapes are moved from 'save set' to 'scratch set' of the media pool.
when the job runs, it looks for any available tape in the scratch set and whichever one it encounters first in the library is overwritten.

anyways, you can still use a custom schedule and use media pools (manually create) with it to protect tapes for the specified 'retention time'
once a tape reaches its specified time... its eligible to be overwritten.

hope this is clear.
