It seems there is  not other way currently but through ODBC. So this is a C API, quite wel explained at
http://webdocs.caspur.it/ibm/udb-6.1/db2l0/db2l002.htm#ToC

the original  ODBC stuff from Microsoft is documented at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms710252(VS.85).aspx

It seems there is at least one commercial tool available
http://www.actualtechnologies.com/

I'm not sure if some odbc software is installed by default but there are two implementation for Unices
iodbc http://www.iodbc.org/index.php?page=docs/odbcstory
unixodbc: http://www.unixodbc.org/

For a portable solution you may try the QT toolkit which may or may not have classes for accessing Databases from C++ programs

and have a look at:

I guess for iphone you better use CoreData, that' s not a really DB stuff but I guess it's the nearest you can get. I have not access to an iphone but I could imagine that compiling SQLite on it should be doable and that would be a nice embeddable SQL engine....
