Where do you make a change so that IE will prompt to save a .csv file you are downloading even though I have the check in the box for "Confirm Open After Download" selected in folder option for .CSV?

Problem:

I have been searching everywhere in all kinds of articles with registry entries and can't find where to make this change. We have a custom software which exports the data into an excel.csv file. The user at some point unchecked the mark to ask to save the file each time. Now they would like to be prompted for this Save option again but I can't figure out where to make the change.

Things that have been tried:

-I have already gone into Folder Options, File Types, CSV - MS Office Excel Comma Seperated Value, Advanced and put a check in the box to Confirm open after download.
-I have opened and closed IE each time after making changes.
-I have the custom program site of ours added as a Trusted Site to reduce popups and messages about displaying mixed content. This is a setting on many pc's yet it still will prompt to Save on their pc as long as they have never unchecked the mark to ask them to save.
-I have selected the "confirm open after download on excel and word to test to make sure the buttons work and they do however they are not based out of IE so there may be something to that.
-I tested changing the option to prevent and allow downloads in IE under the Trusted sites and also to Auto Prompt for the File Download with no luck.

I found a freeware app called RegShot 1.8.2 that takes a screen shot of your registry before and after you make a change so it will allow you to track any changes. I installed this app on a pc that is still prompting for the save option and ran the snap shot. Once I got the data saved I unchecked the box option to prompt me to save and ran the registry snap shot again. After looking through the keys I am still unable to determine where the setting is to make the change. Any help would be appreciated. I just noticed you were already in folder options, however, you stated you put a check IN the box.... you want the confirm after download box to be UNCHECKED, as this option asks you to confirm on opening the file and bypass the confirm before download feature

Sorry for the confusion, I want the box checked so it will prompt the user to save the file every time.

I tried both solutions suggested with no luck. I deleted the whole registry folder entry for the {0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}. There was no "/va /f" at the end.

I will make this one worth 500 if I can get a solution that will work.

I still think what you want is that box UNCHECKED... When you instruct it to prompt AFTER download, it does not prompt before download as you are wanting.... give it a shot unchecked, and if it is not the solution you want, you can always recheck it, and I can do more research for you

I have tried it both ways with the check mark and without. The result is the same where it will automatically open the excel.cvs file and it does not give me the option to save the file. Because the check mark seems to be ineffective now, I think the setting may be taking place in IE or some registry entry has been made and it does not revert the reg entry back... just a thought.

I will look around for more info this afternoon, meanwhile, you DO know that you can right-click the link and save target as from there right? is a pain in the butt I know, but is a good workaround till we can solve this

Ok here is an update.

I took your advice and reset the IE (IE = Internet Explorer) settings on the Security tab (Reset all zones to default level) and it works on some computeres but not all. By resetting IE on 2 of my coworkers pc's they are now seeing the prompt to save. My pc and my bosses pc is not getting the prompt even after clicking the button to reset IE zones.

I ran the regshot program on all the computers again to start comparing them and found the registry key that works for 2 of the computers that are seeing the prompt.

If you delete the {0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\Excel.Sheet.8 folder/value then they are able to see the promt again. If this reg key is in there then they don't see the prompt to save and the file opens immediately.

So NOW, I thought I found the fix so I went to my pc and tried to delete this key but it is not there... so naturally the question comes to mind, "Why would it still keep opening the file without the prompt if the reg key that tells it to do that is missing right??? "

Well I went back and compared all IE zones under the security tab for Internet, Intranet, and Trusted sites with my pc against one of the other computers that is prompting but there were no differences after I clicked Reset IE to the default. I also checked the Advanced tab and the other tabls under Internet Options but I can't find anything different there either.

So now I am baffled and desperate and thought I would try to outsmart the pc and deleted the .csv file type extension so it might be confused and promt me for some kind of action. It just opens the file anyway with plain text and no format. This didn't work so I added that extension back.

So now at this point I will start looking into if there is such a thing as hidden registry keys??? I am not sure what else to try at this point.

I am attaching the registry comparisons on the machines in case this might help.

PS: yes I did know you can tell it save as and told this to the end user but the end user is my boss. Sometimes it't not always wise to tell your boss what to do more than once. ;o)

not sure of this one, but will definately keep looking into it for you, is kinda like my issues at work where some computers log on and run scripts, others log on but ignore scripts. As far as deleting the file extension, that should have prompted you for a what do I do input..... are you absolutely certain that the file IS a .csv and not a .txt or something and just has the extensions "hidden for known file types"? and no, there is no hidden registry keys

Yes I am sure. I had thought that all of our info was .csv but then on one of my coworkers pc's his files were prompting for a .iif file. I thought I might have been on to something here so I asked my boss why am I being prompted for 2 different file types and I found out that the .iif file is for our clients that use Quickbooks to import their data and .csv for the clients that use Peachtree.

We use Peachtree ourselves so ours is .csv.
