Entourage 2008 will not synch with Exchange 2003 accounts, error -18500

I am having problems with Entourage 2008 on a MAC. I am not able to successfully synchronize email Inbox, contacts, etc (to my workplace Exchange 2003 Server via our OWA https exchange server site address + DAV). In the Calendar however, I can create and read items already created. If I create other kinds of new items in Entourage, there are synchronization problems with the Exchange server. I'm not using IMAP or POP3. I can send mail just fine so I know it's connecting. I've also tried clearing the cache and configuring the Entourage client numerous ways as suggested in forums across the Internet. Still, nothing in the Inbox or Contacts.
The error message in Entourage is "Could not synchronize record - Error 18500".
The Exchange server is version 2003, SP2, all current patches, and functioning OWA for years with mobile devices etc working fine.
Entourage v 12.1.5 (081119)
I've tried it on two different Macs, Leopard and Tiger OSX, same result.
I'm wondering if there is a Microsoft Exchange 2003 patch or setting that could be causing the problem. Has anyone else had experience with this?
