I have win XP sp2 and MS Outlook 2003
On starting up I often get this message, has anyone any idea what it means and if I need to do anything please?

You seem to have installed an application: BT Broadband Desktop
Download Autoruns and disable autostart of that application.

Thanks for that link seems very useful
I found two items that look similiar
btbb_McciTrayApp
and
btbb_wcm_McciTrayApp
I deseleted these . Does that sound OK?

Yes, restart check if problem solved.
You can actually deselect almost all autostarted apps but leave your antivirus + userinit + explorer
