Using Action Script 1 how do I make an entire Flash banner link to http://www.google.com ?

Create an invisible button, do this by drawing a rectangle without a border only fill colour, the same size of you banner.  With it selected press F8 to bring up the create symbol box, and select button and give it a name 'invis_btn'.  With it still selected in the properties panel give it an instance name of link_btn.

On your root timeline create a layer and name it actions. Select the first frame and ensure it is a blank keyframe and then open the actions panel.

Here use the following code and it should work.
link_btn.onRelease = function()
{
    //first provide the url, then the window option i.e same browser with
    //_self or new with _blank etc, can't remember if you need the this
    //encapsulated in "" or not.
    getURL("http://www.google.com", "_self");
}
