communication between 2 exchange servers

I'm moving our external (front end) exchange vm server to a different physical machine. Since this (moved) vm needs to be tied to our other exchg vm, how is that connection established? I've gotten two different answers. One was that since they are both in the same domain, they will find each other and not need a physical connection. The other suggestion was to physically connect them with crossover cable.

You don't need to physically connect the two servers together. They simply need to be connected to the network and be able to route to each other's IP address. Connect the two VM hosts to the network, then ensure appropriate network adapters are configured so the Exchange Server VM instances can access the network using the host's Network Card.

If you are able to ping the FE on the other VM from the Mailbox Server and vice-versa, that is sufficient network connectivity, presuming no other settings are changed from the current, working configuration.
