Internet explorer 8 opens twice

I've recently installed Internet Explorer 8. When I click the desktop icon for the browser, it opens two of them at once, both showing the home page (www.google.com). If I click on a link in an email, it opens the page in two separate browsers. If I already have browsers open on the desktop, the link still opens a new tab in two of them.

I have Windows XP Pro SP3
