Microsoft.com, Lexisnexis.com will not load, most other sites will

Client has a SBS 2003 Server. Yesterday, microsoft sites and nexislexis would not load in internet explorer 7( "Waiting for http://www.microsoft.com/..."). Google, Trendmicro... load just fine. cleared DNS cache, flushed dnscache, restarted server and DSL modem. A laptop plugged into the same hub as the client computers, but not a member of the domain can get to microsoft and nexis just fine, so I think the Modem is working fine. Any suggestions on where else to look?

I suggest that you do an online scan with Kaspersky Online scanner which is based at:

http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/virusscanner

And send us the report after the scan. I feel that a critical area scan should be sufficient to get an idea about the machine and if its infected or not. This scan won't remove any infections, if it finds them, but will only report them.

Tried kaspersky, It will start then give a 404 error. Ran full scan from trend micro worry free client server, no virus. Running MS windows Malicious removal tool for full scan. Attached hijack this log, may be of some help. Thanks in advance for the help.

Have a look at your hosts file maybe? look here > %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\
and check entries related to the sites you can't reach

Hosts files are clean. I did notice that both sites that are not loading resolve to addresses ending with .akadns.net, don't know if this might help point towards the problem or not.

Dont worry about akadns.net it relates to Akamai

Install Firefox and try accessing the same sites as it could be an issue with IE Enhanced Security Configuration.

Just to be sure download Malwarebytes either on this or another PC if you can't download it on this one and update then run a full scan.

Have tried Firefox, no luck. have run Malwarebytes, Microsoft malicious software remover, Trend Micro Worry Free Business. Thank in advance for the help

Hmmmm, I hate problems like this, probably not as much as you though! ;)

There doesn't seem to be a clear route to solving this so I'm gonna just think out loud

Right its not a DNS issue as the server is using the same DNS as the laptop and go's to other sites just fine. None the less try OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220), as I have seen issues where the ISP's DNS servers are not updated with the correct IP.

The problem seems browser independent, but try installing IE8.

Do you have any software installed that might interfere with viewing sites?

Also is the below the same results as your getting

C:\>ping www.microsoft.com

Pinging lb1.www.ms.akadns.net [207.46.193.254]

C:\>ping lexisnexis.com

Pinging lexisnexis.com [138.12.4.174]

As you said that you are having trouble with akadns but lexisnexis dosent seem to use them.

Thats all I have for now, hope it helps in some way either directly or indirectly!

Problem solved. ISP made improvments to their network. After changing the dsl modem from PPPoE to PPPoa, everything works like a charm, and a lot faster. Thank you much RobDating  and warturtle for the assistance.
