Hi,
just wanted to know how to set up printing in ubuntu.  I actually went through the steps but keep getting printer sharing access denied so when i went to the network places area and saw the name of my windows workgroup, i tried to open it but nothing comes up.  When i went to do the printer setup however it finds sharename of printer under the pc and workgroup name.  Is there an initial setup i'm missing to enable windows network access?  I've disabled all windows firewalls as well.  thanks.

You have to establish windows authentication on Linux - like using smbpasswd for every user XOR linking to AD or NT passwordserver.
Another way is to use CUPS as IPP endpoint

Hi,

what i did was first see if i could map a drive to the windows pc attached to the printer i needed.  I couldn't do it in places, network within ubuntu since i think there is a problem with workgroup browsing when using nautilus which i read.  I then connected by using ip address instead and input the share name and user login that i created in the windows local accounts.  I was able to authenticate after putting in password which i was prompted to do.  I then did the same for the printer install by using the ip address and share name.  What was strange was that i could browse to the printer share but it would keep getting the printer share inacessible error when i tested the verify button.  After using the ip address instead, it would verify right away.  Printing worked fine afterwards.  I've only used ubuntu for a week now and never had installed printer so didnt know about all the samba stuff as well.  Thanks for the info, i will take a look at it as well.

Are you sure my question for more information is correct answer?
We can keep discussion open if you want to fix NMB browsing, but otherwise you solved without any help.

Well, i would actually like confirmation to know if browsing uisng nautilius is not working in ubuntu, otherwise would still like to award you the points since it was still helpful and you have helped me before in great detail and appreciate it.  Let me know if installing samba client was necessary in enabling mapping or was it really because i used ip address instead of workgroup.  thanks.  i usually make one change at a time in troubleshooting but this time did 2 at once so not sure if ip address would have worked if i did not install samba client.

You have to launch nmbd or connect to wins server to browse network.
Samba client is necessary to mount any SMB share.
Samba server has to be installed and configured to browse computers or users.

what is nmbd?  If i had not installed samba client, are you saying i would not have been able to map from ubuntu to windows share even using ip address? Just a bit confused as to which direction i need the samba client whether mapping from windows to ubuntu or other way around?  thanks.

Samba client teakes whatever resolver system provides. If you have installed and configured and started winbindd its ability is similar to WinXP, if winbindd is not OK you get whatever your DNS server and windows server supports - sometimes DNS record is correctly updated, sometimes not.
nmbd publishes name in network neighborhood, and holds the list for nautilus.
it is hard to tell what makes it better for your particular case - nmbd, winbindd, or both, or no luck at all.
