Help - PC/Laptop cannot read my External HD

Hello Experts,

i have been using my external Hard drive Samsung HM160JC for quite a while now and just recently, 2 days ago my PC and Laptop is not being able to detect this anymore. The errors i have seen is smilar to the error of inserting a USB1.0 version to a USB 2.0 verson with that scissoe like animation on the tray icon.

Also, the last thing i rememerred that i have trasferred data to my mobile HDD was transfeering around 2GB of picture data from my Canon camera using my laptop IBM Thinkpad T42 Windows XP.

I tried again this morning and borrow the USB cable from a friend who has another mobile HDD but no activty this time, not even the first error i have encountered "usb error".

I asked my friend to try it on his laptop and i was surprised that althought there was no Autoplay that was displayed....we can see the animation on the tray icon in that the system is installing the new device....however..i find it strange that there was a notification that the laptop needs to be rebotted before the installation will be complete. We didn't try to reboot his laptop and jsut remove the hard drive. But when he tried to click on the icon"safely remove hardware" the usB mobile device is not registered there so we jsut pull out the cable...

Can someone help me as i have many important files on thie mobile HDD. i really appreacite your help in advance. Thanks.

something happened today when i tried to open the case of my mobile drive 2.5". After i opened the case and also unscrew the remaining two screws that anchored the disk to the PCB, and then iturn it back again the two screws in the PCB but this time withou the case i connect again my ext drive to my laptop and to my surprise laptop was recognizing the drive however i canonly see this in the tray icon whoitut the letter drive" safely remove mass storage drive" whotut the leter and thedrive is not showing in my computer. I did look into "disk managemnt" under my computer but still i cannot see my Samsung hard sik drive. I knew before that when inserting flash drives and cannot see them i nthe my comptuer, i knew that the letter is mixing up with other drives mostly in my case network drives.

However, this time, even my netwrok drive "I",  i cannot see this anymore in disk mamagenmetn.

Pls help. Hope that i will not reformat my drive. thanks.

connect the disk to a working pc's sata or ide port.
this will show if the drive, or the external case is bad.
if it is the drive, you can try any of these  to recover your data :

It is MUCH more likely to be the enclosure than the drive.  Nobus' advice is good; if you don't have a spare sata or ide port in your machine, you could try putting the drive in another USB enclosure.
