That error message happened to me soon after I installed XP in a triple boot situation using Partition Magic to manage Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows XP, back around 2003 or 2004. Can't find my question to give you a link for it -- why doesn't Experts-Exchange give a simple way to allow you to search your own questions? ;0( But here is another one that a google search found where I referenced it:

Key word is "simple." Like, for instance, when you go to your own profile and want to search either your own questions or your own answers, there is no search box where you can type in your search query... ;0)

If not you probably only need to uninstall a hotfix, if it is also rebooting you might have a problem with a hidden partition on your drive.
