mysql installed twice

I tried installing xampp before and had problems so I uninstalled it.
Now I installed AppServ, but mysql won't start.

I keep seeing things left over from xampp which I think are related.  There was a service that was stopped, which I disabled.  If I go to the mysql folder now

C:\AppServ\MySQL\bin and run mysql.exe, I get
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'ODBC'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

Well, at least something is responding.

1. Is there more than 1 MySQL service listed? (shortcut: Start --> Run --> services.msc)

2. Did you set up a root password when you installed xampp? If so, try running mysql -uroot --password=your_root_password

If that doesn't work, then try it with the root password you used for AppServe.

That might tell you if it's looking at the xampp setup or not.

There's probably a file called c:\windows\my.ini (depending on what windows version you're running). Given that you said you ran mysql.exe and didn't specify any arguments, that probably means that the my.ini file is instructing the mysql.exe client program to connect with a username of "ODBC"

Generally, most MySQL setups place the my.ini file in C:\Windows, so if there's one left over from xampp that didn't get overwritten, then the MySQL service might still be using the old data directories left by xampp.

Hope that gives you a starting point. Post any updates.

Thanks, in services, I only see the new appserv version.

I checked my c:\appserv\mysql\my.ini and there is no password
