Sorry - can I clarify.

When you try to connect to windows live messenger are you trying to connect through a VPN, or outside a VPN tunnel.  Are you trying to connect to Windows Live messenger from the server..?

Ok....does your internet traffic route through the VPN?  Is there a proxy on the VPN server, and if so, can you configure the windows live messenger software to use the proxy?

If not, set up Squid on the Centos box and configure Windows Live Messenger to use it...
