Dell Fiber Channel Question

Can you use a Cisco MGBSX1 - see here - http://www.provantage.com/cisco-systems-mgbsx1~7LNKW019.htm to connect a Dell PowerVault 132T Fiber Channel Bridge like this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220383319118 to a Cisco SLM2048 switch?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No, you can't. The SLM2048 is an Ethernet switch. The Dell 132T Fibre Channel bridge is talking a completely different protocol: Fibre Channel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibre_channel), and the two are simply incompatible. Fibre Channel is a storage networking protocol.

OK, so can you connect it to a Fiber Channel card in a PC without a Fiber Switch?

Duncan MeyersCommented:
Yep. No problem. You may need to set the FC card to "loop preferred" or "loop only" for the topology, but it should just connect. Having said that, the new 8Gb cards won't sync down to 1Gb.
