Got a feedback from a customer who uses our web-application, running on IIS 5.0 / XPSP2, that occasionally they get this error reported back:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Network Error (tcp_error)
A communication error occurred: "Operation timed out"
The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.
For assistance, contact your network support team.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

My problem is that this is periodic, and i cannot "catch it" when it happens, or ex. get them to ping, tracert the IP.

Im pretty sure though that the machine is up running, and since its periodic i suspect something with the configuration of IIS or some serverside issue.

Its running on intranet - not in internet.

Tried alot of google on this, and doesnt really give a clear understanding of why this errormessage happens at all or what can cause it - besides strange issues like "firewall, router, etc." which i dont think is the issue.

Can somebody assist on some settings serverside ?

Could be just about anything, especially if it is intermittent.
To help identify where the problem might be occurring can you explain how it is affecting the users.
Are they not able to connect to the web server?  Is this an error that is showing up in their browser?  Does it happen to more than one user at a time?  Does it happen at the same time of the day when it happens?  All of these questions can help narrow down what might be happening on the machine when the problem occurs.  If this is a problem for just one user or users on one specific sub net then there could be something happening on that segment that is causing problems ... just as a device proxy arping that is intercepting the requests and not passing them through to the server.
