AutoCAD 2009 can open a drawing drawn in AutoCAD 2007.
AutoCAD 2007 can open a drawing drawn in AutoCAD 2009.

The same won't be true of AutoCAD 2010 which intruduces a new DWG format. Older versions will not be able to open an AutoCAD 2010 drawing without AutoCAD 2010 saving it to a previous DWG version first.
