These are great source for software specific planning / quality control etc.  I am looking for Data Quality Analysis steps like what are all the steps to validate the data; missing First name, have commas in names etc etc.

thx

A broadly accepted definition for data / information quality is that quality is determined by the fitness of use which depends on the consumer of the data. Because of this, it is a challenge to develop standardized steps. This is because the "standard" may be too rigorous in one context and too weak in another, thus it can't be called a standard.

The first step of an data quality project should be an assessment. During the assessment phase, it is the DQ analyst responsibility to develop a common understanding with the data consumer on the appropriated definition of quality for the business context.

In your second post, you indicated you are interested in address management data. In the name and address data domain, the quality of the first name may be adequate (even when missing) when it is for the use of to targeting a retail catalog to a roof top. We've all received a mail addressed to "current resident" or "current occupant." If you use of the name and address data is to send a credit card bill or acknowledge the death, receipt of a donation, or another use, then the acceptable quality of the first name field should be higher.

I can refer you to a couple of links that may be of use to you.

This book gives very good detail about the differing phase of a DQ project which should include assessment, improvement, prevention, DQ metadata, and monitoring.

In terms of standards, the Federal government's Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has a DQ framework. Note that it is a framework and not a standard.
