Get status of an unreacheable mail server from sendmail module

Hi,

I use perl sendmail module to send emails.
Is there a way to know if the mail server that  i am trying to reach is available or not ?
Similarly can i get to know if a mail has been sent by the mail server ?

Hi,

I use Mail::Sendmail, Mail::Sender.

Using Mail::Sendmail, the sendmail function will not return true if it can't connect.  You can use something like:
     sendmail(%mail) or die $Mail::Sendmail::error;

Using Mail::Sender, you will not get a Mail::Sender object if it can't connect.
