Monitor streaming

I want to monitor how our bandwidth is used in my organization. I want to be able to see if someone is streaming or not. Is there any software out there that is free and can easily tell me this info? If not free, who do you use?

    Accepted Solution

    What device do you have at the perimeter of the network?  Are you looking at accesses to certain sites or streaming using a specific protocol or HTTP...?

    Ntop is really good for monitoring the protocols and services use.  If you want more detail regarding the type of traffic you can use wireshark to analyse the traffic....

    If it's a specific source and destination IP that you want to monitor the streaming for and the perimeter device is linux based, you can also log overall traffic based on the iptables rules....see....

    What network gear do you have and does it support flow technologies? If so then you can try out the below flow analyzers;

    SolarWinds NetFlow Analyzer      NetFlow/SFlow
    Scrutinizer NetFlow/Sflow Analyzer      NetFlow/SFlow
    Caligare Flow Inspector      NetFlow/SFlow
    PRTG      NetFlow/RRDTool
    Adventnet Netflow Analyzer      NetFlow
    StealthWatch® Xe      SFlow
    Traffic Sentinel      SFlow
    Splunk      Propriety

    If your network gear does not support any flow technology then the work arround is to use NProbe;

    Wireshark is a very handy network utility which you can use to sniff the network traffic and analyze it. You need to setup port-mirroring to get traffic of whole network or you will be needing a hub to get whole network's traffic.
