Can SEO spiders crawl past overlays?

I'm wanting to place an overlay on my site and I'm wondering if that will hurt my SEO rankings because Google and other search engines won't be able to crawl past it to index my page.

Does place the overlay interfere with the crawling?

I've attached an example of what I'm talking about when I say "overlay"...

Thanks!

Spiders crawl through all links and ignore most JavaScript. It's not like a user clicking a link through the div overlay, its more like a user viewing the source, reading the text and only visiting links with an href attribute. Most search engines won't even see the overlay.

Short answer is no it won't hurt you. But it's not the best practice for "real" people.
