Internet Connection Problems

We have about 14 computers; out of which I experience file download / internet access problems on 3 computers.  In the middle of a download (file sized between 5 -40 MB) it will stop and will not progress; you have to cancel and retry.  Most of the times you are unsuccessful and  eventually end up downloading it on a different computer.  Could it just be a the ethernet cards or the settings.  How do I optimize the connections (I am certain it's not the Internet connection from the provider).  Where do I start, what do I look for?
