install english OS using french CD Key

Is it possible (and legal) to install the English version of XP using a french vista Business OEM key.

Scenario. Head office (in Montreal) sent a PC to us. PC has a Vista Business license but has been downgraded to XP. Problem is the version of XP is French. Can I wipe the HD and install an English version of XP using the OEM key on this PC? Is it legal (I don't have a copy of the OEM EUL agreement to review.

Hi huntleyj,

Each key is meant for a certain copy of XP. It won't work if you took a Vista Business key and tried to use it as a XP key.

I understand that.
I have an OEM XP CD for a very similar PC model than when used does not ask for an actual key to be input by the user. I guess what I am asking is would the French Vista Business OEM license attached to this PC allow me to downgrade to an English version of XP Pro.
Sorry if I made the original question confusing.

I don't believe there is a restriction on the language you choose for the XP downgrade, though you do need to have purchased licenses for this too for it to be legal.

If your English OEM disk is from the same PC manufacturer (and uses the same CD authentication method) it should install without problem.

Actually this would be perfectly legal, Vista Business and Ultimate(even oem versions) have downgrade rights for Xp pro. Depending on the pc manufacture you may not even have to enter the key.

Though it was just volume licensing, jamietoner is right about the downgrade from business.

Split the points because the two questions were answered seperately.
First question was answered by Nah:  "I don't believe there is a restriction on the language you choose for the XP downgrade"

Second question about the downgrade rights originally ansered by jamie.

thanks to all
