How to make a thumbnail sheet with images for ftp server

I have a Freecom FSG-3 (a multifunction server for ftp, web, files, etc.). Cool stuff, but it runs on Linux 2.6 based on Snapgear and difficult for me to program.
Now I want to store photos on the FSG, so that others can download them using ftp. My question is: how can I make sheets with thumbnails (and the filename) of my photos so that people can click on the thumbnail to download the file? Preferably not with an app like Photoshop. So, no overkill.
I think there are two kind of solutions:
1. do it "inside" the FSG. There is a program that can do that, but it's too complicated for me
(http://www.openfsg.com/index.php/Custom_Automatic_Directory_Index_with_Thumbnails)
2. do it on my computer and manually change the address of the files to the ftp address.

A solution is to use some package to create the index.htm file, and the corresponding thumnail size .jpg files which you then transport to the FTP server.

A free package that requires a some programming would be imageMagick.
An $50 package that is easy, straight forward to use would be Thumbsplus by Cerious Software http://www.cerious.com/. Tutorial and Trail version available.

Be ware: if used on a ftp server, you need to set permission to anonymous. If not, the ftp server will ask login credentials for each thumbnail displayed on the sheet... Unfortunately, my FSG-3 does not allow anonymous login, but that problem is beyond this question here.

Found the solution for my FSG:
1. create a user called anonymous and at this step put any password
2. then go to users again and change the password of the user to *
3. go to the folder you want to give access to
4. give the user anonymous read only access.

Be ware: If you give the user anonymous more rights, anyone can delete files, but more importantly, change the files with virusses or other crap!

I found this only works with a sheet with only some thumbnails. If you want to show more you get error messages (time out etc.). You can solve this with php.
