All phones are Aastra 57i with the latest firmware.

Some users complain of echo , and cut off sound sometimes. There is no FXO etc hardware in the system , its pure VOIP

I am looking for input as how to narrow down the source of echo etc and make the voice quality best it can be?

Thanks for your expert help.

Who is hearing the echo?

Who cares about your ping time to Yahoo?  A more relevant ping test would be to your VoIP provider.

Also, is your 'cable modem' performing router functions for the network?  You might be better off using a router and placing your cable modem in bridge mode (if possible).  You could then enable some traffic shaping rules.  It's likely bursty internet traffic from user downloads is causing some of your problems.

Just few users hear it some times , your suggestion will be helpful if this connection was used for anything else. PBX machine have two NIC's , one has external public ip address and the other is internal and also used with DHCP to pass ip addresses to phones . Network is for voice only and no other device is connected to  it.

well then your description is wrong.  Your PBX is acting as your firewall and router in this case.  Make sure you have the firewall configured properly.  I still say you should have traffic shaping in place on that box as I highly doubt you're getting 15/3m consistently.

If your users are hearing the echo, it's likely caused by the far side.

what specific firewall setting you recomending , i am just running it at default settings.
I have gone through some links but most of them deal with the situation when u have a line card in the system for PSTN , i have none.

This is to my VOIP provider

I would recommend taking a look at Arno's IPtables's firewall.  One of the developers from AstLinux has provided a plugin to the firewall that performs traffic shaping.  Since it was developed for VoIP applications, it works quite well.  It's based on the Wondershaper traffic shaping script and can use either htb or hsfc shaping mechanisms.  You'll want to set the downstream and upstream internet connections to about 90% of the typical results you get when doing a speed test.

Here's a link to the firewall script.
