I am a server newbie and know nothing of exchange.
The office I work for stopped receiving e-mail yesterday about 3pm. They were able to send interoffice but outside mail was not getting in.

Today I rebooted the server and now non of the outlook clients can connect to the exchange server.

The exchange server is on a domain.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated

Make sure all of your exchange services are running.  they would be named things lilke "Microsoft Exchange Information Store"

You can look at them by going to Start - Run - services.msc - Enter

ok, what about the MS exchange site replication service? thats disabled and the service you mentioned is set to automatic but did not start. I tried to start it but got the system error in event viewer:
source: service control manager
category: none
event id: 7024

desc:
The MS exchange Information Store terminated with service-specific error 0.

Check out this KB article, it may prove helpful.  But from the sounds of it, you have more problems on your hands than just a busted exchange server.

In regards to the W3SVC event ID you received that is because MS Exch IS has not started yet... since it isn't.

Did you review the KB I posted?

basically what it is telling you is that if you are receiving the listed errors.  Verify that you are...  Then check in ADSI edit where it tells you to , that the objects exist.  If they don't run exchange domainprep.  setup.exe /domainprep.

Let's do the safe bet here.  Let's use the setup.exe /domainprep tool.  You're a rookie and it could blow up with one wrong move, and be in a non-recoverable state.

I feel bad for you, you're inexperienced, in a bad situation and it isn't your fault.  In this instance, community support isn't your best bet.  Email is mission critical, and you don't know enough yet to use community support effectively.  In time you will, but right now, you need to contact a microsoft certified partner for help.  Don't go blowing it up.

let me give you some background info, the IT guy quit and deleted the password file list and left the business with no passwords to their servers. I had to break into the dc server and change all the passwords. I also had to break into the webserver which is not on the domain. I changed the passwords to most of the Admin accounts and the former IT guy's account.

everything worked fine after that.  I did notice that the webserver rebooted on its own after an automatic update yesterday when I got here.

All servers are 2003 except the exchange server.

I had to build an NTFS4DOS boot disk with usb support to copy the sam/service from the repair folder on the webserver then used 0phcrack.
I used http://www.petri.co.il/reset_domain_admin_password_in_windows_server_2003_ad.htm for the dc.

I did change the passwords on several types of Admin accounts.

ok, correct me if I'm wrong but i what i have learned is that the Service control manager fails to start if a service it needs does not start.  In the system log it says event 7024 and we've gone over that.

There is a file replication Service log and and has an error
event 13568
source: NtFrs

in the application log I kept getting event 5000 source: MSExchangeIS

I made sure all the dependent services were running and now I get:
event: 9581 source: MSExchangeIS
event: 9564 source: MSExchangeIS

your thoughts? I'm just snooping around at this point.

http://forums.techarena.in/small-business-server/801015.htm

EnumQueryServicesStatus:OpenService FAILED 1060:

Coincendentally, the owner left a message with the former I.T. guy last night, and now these problems arise. looking at the event viewer nothing like this has happened in a very long time.

Is there supposed to be an M: drive somewhere??? because I've read about an M drive that exchange makes but I don't see one on here.

Alright, here's what happened.... You have one problem, a big one albeit, and it causes fifty more.  You're hunting down solutions all these problems, when in fact it is all rooted in Active Directory.  Here's the deal, you're in past the point of no return.  Make a copy of pub1.edb and priv1.edb.  They will be located in C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Data (or something similar to that).  Copy them out of the directory.  These are your message stores.  You may need to copy them off the server if free space is an issue.  That being said, then do the setup.exe /domainprep.  You can find the setup.exe file on the CD for Exchange.

The worst thing that will happen is that it won't fix it.  I was doing some thinking about this last night... You're going to have to try this.  The reason I told you to copy pub1 and priv1 is so that you at least have a backup of the messages to date.

didnt find out until we had the server back up. I had read something last night about AV but I could not find where or how to deal with it. Eventually Joe got to it and voila, we could connect to the server again. Then we tested, could send but not receive. DNS was all jacked up. Started making phone calls to track who was responsible for DNS, biz owner really had no idea. Finally got to the right company, they said the domain was owned by the former IT guy. I renewed it and had the owner change the ownership. So come monday everything should be peachy.

Thanks for your help and patience. =)
