Can windows 2003 r2 join the domain that is 2000 mixed mode?

Currently I am trying to join this new server to our domain which is running in 2000 mix mode. I cannot raise it to 2003 as there are still several 2000 servers that I have to keep running.

When I try to join it to the domain it can see and returns the login prompt to enter the user which has privilege to add it to the domain. When I enter it comes up with the following:

"The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "MYDOMAIN";
Logon Failure: The target account name is incorrect"

I have double checked that it's correct and I've even tried with DOMAIN\username

any clues would be nice. ^^

Server 2003 R2 can be on the same domain. Does the server point to the Domain's DNS servers.

yes it's pointing to the correct DNS Server.

the domain controller is the DNS server as well. It can see it fine just return error, just don't see why.

nothing in event log, nothing is denied when I ran wireshark either. I'm out of luck.

Yea I can, I know that it can see it and all hence the prompt for the user credential comes up but it keeps coming up that it's incorrect.... and I swear it's correct I even created the another administrator account to test that and it's the same result.

Run a netdiag and post from the domain controller.

Use DNS-syntax of domain name instead of NetBIOS version when entering the domain name to join.

Darius GhassemCommented:
Instead of domain\username use username@domain.com

If this is your first R2 DC,  depending on how your forest is configured and if multiple domains are involved, you may have to run ADPrep from CD2 of the R2 install. This may require Enterprise admin/Schema Admin rights.

It was a stupid mistake, the domain controller's net logon service was not running =_+"
