AD Terminal Services Profile Path changes

We're seeing a recurring issue where the Terminal Services Profile path in Active Directory changes from

\\Server\UsernameShare\ProfileFolder

to

\\Server\UsersFolder\UsernameFolder\ProfileFolder

I should explain the UsernameShare is a folder on the file server shared as the users logonname, and all of these folders are stored under the UsersFolder (which is itself a share)

I have not been able to find a pattern as to why some users get changed and some not - initially we thought perhaps they all had changed some time in the past (when we were moving data between file servers, and the shares didn't exist for a short time?) but it has definitely recurred for some users.

Kudos and 500 pts to whomever can steer me right...

i would first try to map which ones have changed to the computers that are connecting and see if there is a pattern.
I had something similar happen with all my vista clients when i redirected them to a network share they all wanted :\users to be part of the path. It was really strange.
