Out of office reply works on lan but not on outside incoming mail?

We have a problem regarding our out of office reply messages from outlook 2003. It seems when we send an internal email to the person that's not available we receive his/her out of office reply normally. But when someone outside our company (other mail server or gmail) sends an email then they don't get the same reply.
The outlook the person used is not available anymore as the computer is reformatted so all the information must be contained on our Exchange 2003 server.
