How to confirm a CD drive is defective

After you place a CD in the drive the light on the drive blinks and the hard drive light blinks. After 10 seconds the lights stop blinking. No response. When you go to My Computer and click on the drive icon it says Insert a disk in drive D. The second drive E: works fine.

I've uninstalled the device driver in the device manager. Then add new hardware which identifies the drive and says it is working fine.

Sometimes they die.. :-( Software don't check all internal systems of drive. Controller in answering - that is enough to OS to show to You its Good status.

But before go and buy a new one try to check IDE (SATA) cables.

    Accepted Solution

    1. Try several different CDs in the drive, including audio CDs.
    2. Remove the drive and put it in another PC and test.
    3. If it works in another PC, try it in the other PC with the original cable.
    4. If it continues to work in other PC with original cable, put it back in original PC and swap it's position with the other CD so that it's using the other connector on the cable.
