Mapped network drive opens notepad

When I click on a mapped network drive in Windows XP, the Notepad program opens a blank document.  The drive maps to folder on a Windows 2000 Server.
Tried opening the specific folder on several different computers.  Some network drives open notepad, others do not.

When I right click on the mapped drive the menu shows Autoplay, AuToPlay as the first, and second items on the list.
The network drive can be accessed using a DOS prompt and by using Windows Explorer.
Notepad only seems to open when going through My Computer and listing the existing drives.

I already tried searching the registry for anything strange.   Is this a virus or a file association gone wrong?
Thanks for any help.

Is there an "autorun.inf" file in the root-directory of the mapped drive?
If so: What's the content of it?
Try moving it away or just renaming to something like "autorun.inf.old" or so.
Open the registry and search for either Auto Play or Auto Run, press F3 to
continue searching and you should eventually find a few folders that contain notepad.exe
