Recently Firefox was upated to 3.0.08.
But now it is so slow that I can't use it!
Why?

Have you tried removing it completly and re-installing the full current version ?

I would expect it might have something do with a plugin you may have installed. I think firefox 3 checks all plugins for updates when you start it. Maybe a bad plugin could be causing the slowness.

Thomas49019 has a good point to check this:

Plugin issues: Java can be disabled from the Content tab of the Options menu (JavaScript is not Java). Starting with Firefox 3, you can view your installed plugins via "Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins" and disable them individually, to see if a plugin is causing the issue. Windows only: For previous Firefox versions, you can close Firefox completely and remove the contents of the Firefox plugins folder, normally C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins, to a backup location. Note that this will not disable plugins found via plugin scanning. If the problem goes away, it was caused by one of the removed or disabled plugins. If the problem continues, see Issues related to plugins for additional plugin diagnostics. If the problem still persists:  http://kb.mozillazine.org/Issues_related_to_plugins

Thanks for your suggestions. I checked all plugins, disabling and enabling no change 25 seconds for firefox to load. I then  removed firefox, downloaded and installed again. Still very slow to load. No real change. Any further suggestions?

I also noticed that the unload of firefox or ie appears to take a few seconds longer than previous?

1. Are other browser slow to load as well or only Firefox?
2. Is Firefox slow at changing pages once it has been opened?

Once opened Firefox is okay. I use Firefox to test web site design. The Error Console is quite helpful.
But Firefox is slow to open a blank page. ???

I wonder if some bad settings or problems with the old firefox persisted even after the reinstall?

Maybe try following the steps on this link.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately it didn't work.  Start up time is too long 25-30 seconds.
However I did notice that my new profile has a very large 5,248 KB urlclassifier3.sqlite file and some Nero *.dat files that I don't know I would need.

Still confused!

Well, first the .dat files probably have nothing to do with Nero is just a really common extension used by programs. ".dat" files have no secified structure and are purely just a extension people use for storing any sort of data.

After searching your problem probably has something to do with the Firefox 3 phising filter. The filter is designed to stop you from going to potentially unsafe sites. However, on startup it has to get a new update from google of the malicious sites. I think there may be some problem going on during this update which is causing your delay. Look at this site for further explanation and how to turn off the phising filter.

Firefox will always take longer to start that IE because it's not actually intergrated into the OS like Microsoft's 'baby'.
IE is always partially loaded to shorten start-up time by having the drivers already loaded and waiting.

When you start Firefox all those supporting [software] drivers have to load --before Firefox can and that slows things down.

Also Firefox 3.0.8 is a HUGE HUGE memory hog.
Contrary to claims it's even worse about memory use than previous versions.
Virtual memory will usually creep up over 256Mb and even up over 512Mb -just- for Firefox.
I have found no tweak that will knock Virtual Memory use down to something reasonable with version 3.0.8 and I've tried LOTS of them at this point.

Still 25 seconds is absolutely rediculous.

Thomas4019 Thanks!
I tried aremoving Firefox 3.0.9 and all references to Mozilla and Firefox from my PC again!
No Luck! Still takes too long to load: 25-30 seconds. Tried Registry Cleaner, Ad-Aware scan, etc.
No Luck! So where do I look now? Firefox has no real support that I can find.

Still Frustrated, Bob

I started using Firefox because it was supposed to be light-weight and fast compared to IE.
It's evolved into MORE of a pig than IE.

I've gotten so feed up with it that I'm trying Opera again.
I used Opera about 10 years ago and it was very good but they started charging for personal use for the current version so I went back to IE and quit paying attention to what Opera was up to.
Frustration with Firefox inspired me to look again and guess what... Opera free for personal use again!

There are versions for Windows, MAC, Linux, and others:

Have you tried disabling the phising filter like it suggests in this link?

Thanks to all!

Thomas4019: I did rename the XXXXurlclassifier3.sqlite which was 20,380 KB. The next time I ran FF I got a 32Kb urlclassifier3.sqlite. I also unchecked both "Tell me .... I then made FF display a blank page instead of Google Start Page.
Also I found urlclassifier3.sqlite in:
" Doc.. & Set....\Admin...\LOCAL SETTINGS\application data\mozill\firefox\profiles\6b0w2cr.default\"
It was not in:
" Doc.. & Set....\Admin...\application data\mozill\firefox\profiles\ 6b0w2cr.default\"
I'm going to leave this go and accept your help. Thanks

FF is still slow but seems better: less than 20 sec not 30 sec to load!
Thanks again!
