Allow users to install programs on Vista Business


I am running a SBS 2003 server with 10 clients, all using Vista Business. Is it possible through GP or similar to allow the users to install programs (adobe reader, flash, itunes etc) without granting them administrator rights?

Not easily. Users will need Administrator rights to install most applications, as the applications need to modify system files during installation.

Your best bet would be for applications which make use of Windows Installer, which you can force through Group Policy to always install with elevated privileges. The setting is in Computer Configuration, Admin Templates, Windows Components, Windows Installer and is called "Always install with elevated privileges". You need to enable that AND the equivalent policy in User Configuration for it to be effective, and remember it is only Windows Installer-based applications which it will affect.
