I recently took over the management of a network with literally no security and my first task has been to put in place a cisco router with firewall. With this done our blackberry internet service has stopped working! Originally the mail server had a public IP address! now it sits behind the firewall.

Does someone know what protocol / port number BIS uses to talk to the mail server?

BIS communicates with the mail server over standard email protocols. If you have Exchange, it communicates with OWA; otherwise, it can use POP3 or IMAP.

What mail server is in place? If BIS is configured to communicate with OWA in Exchange, it will use either port 80 or 443, depending on what is configured in the Blackberry devices. The connection will be made to the IP address registered behind whichever domain name is specified as the OWA address; in other words, a domain of https://mail.domain.com/exchange programmed into BIS will communicate with the server at mail.domain.com on port 443 (https port).

If you have some other mail server, it will be using either POP or IMAP. Their ports are 110 (POP) and 143 (IMAP), or 995 (Secure POP) and 993 (Secure IMAP).

Hi tigermatt

As soon as I permitted 110 and configured port forwarding for POP3 to the mail server, BIS started working again.
