WSUS broken error 421 connection to database failed

We have SBS 2003R2 Premium.  The WSUS is failing and I can no longer get to the Monitor and Reporting screen.  The reporting is sending emails ... just same message of database connection.

I don't mind reinstalling WSUS ... it is 2.0 and I know that I need to have 3.0 installed.  Evidently the WSUS has not worked in 18 months and when I asked it to sync thats when it went into failure.  We have SQL 2005 and are not currently using it.  We will be installing a software that requires SQL in the very near future.  Any and all suggestions will help.

I would definitely uninstall  and then upgrade to 3.0

Upgrade from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0

Also be aware that after you upgrade to 3.0 you will no longer use a webpage to administer Wsus, you will need to use the MMC from Start>>>administrative tools>>>Update services

What should I expect in Uninstalling WSUS.  Is there a plan or checklist ... I don't want to lock up the server ... It hosts our email through exchange in addition to all of the users desktops and data.

I just noticed your link. :)

What about the databases ... should I start from scratch.  If so how do I do this.  I don't understand the importance of the databases considering that it has not worked in 18 months.

I uninstalled WSUS 2.0 and the "Performance and Reporting" is still in ERROR state.  I don't want to install WSUS 3.0 and compound what ever is going on with the system.

When I go to the P&R services it starts and stops with an ERROR Code of 1.

I have pasted the Error Below

Where do I go from here?

One last question before I drive out to the site ...

The reinstall of R2 shows to install WSUS first then R2.

1. Is this correct

2. Do I want to install WSUS 3.1 instead of 2.1?  I have already DL the exe WSUS30_SP1-x86

Donald StewartNetwork AdministratorCommented:

I think I'm done.  I installed 3.1 and the Reporting now works.

Question:
In the 3.0 instructions the GPO asks to link OU to GPO ... what is OU.

I DIDNOT install R2 after installing WSUS 3.1 ... doI install?

Donald StewartNetwork AdministratorCommented:
OU is Organizational Unit, this will give you more info
