The css style border is not working on select html form!

I am trying to add this styling css to the select option html form it works fine in FIREFOX and infortunately it didn't work in IE,
What i need is to make the border looks red when an error message is been displayed all i need is the css i can do the rest
document.getElementById(v).style.border="1px #FF0000 solid";

    You may need to format the border value as so (example):

    "1px solid #FFFFFF"

    In your case (to reiterate):
    document.getElementById(v).style.border="1px solid #FF0000";

    If that fails, try this:

    Now, if that fails, there's clearly some other underlying issue.
