We have just upgraded our Sybase environment from 12.5 to 15.
We have classic asp pages that call stored procedures that return text data type information.
We ran into a situation where our asp pages, that ran fine under Sybase 12.5, are not returning any rows in Sybase 15. When we removed the text fields from the sql queries and all of the records are returned to the page. When we add them back in, no records are returned. Is there some type of setting we need to make in order to utilize text data types?

Thanks

First, I hope it you are running 15.0.2 or .0.3 and not 15.0.0 which is not stable.  Second, which version of 12.5.x were you running?  It makes a difference because the ODBC drivers changed in the middle there from third party to Sybase-provided.

Next, have you changed the client stack, ctLib and ODBC, to version 15 or are you still running the old stuff?  If you are using ODBC, you may see differences between a pre 12.5.3 driver and anything after that.

Let us know a few more of the details so we can help you out.

Hi Bill,

We are running Sybase 15.0.2 under Unix and we did change the client stack, ctLib and ODBC, to version 15. We also changed all of the calls in our asp files as well. The ODBC driver version is 15.0.0.50.

Thanks for the help.

This is the second EE question in a week regarding some strange problem with the v15 ODBC drivers.

If you can, setup a box that has the older v12.5.x ctLib and ODBC and see if that clears up the problem.

You might also search the Sybase tech support area for CRs related to v15 ODBC.  It would not be too surprising if there were some issues with ODBC since Sybase recently switched to internallly developed drivers instead of the third party ones they used for a long time.

Bill

Bill,

Does this mean you can connect to a Sybase 15 database using a 12.5 ODBC driver?

Thanks

Absolutely.  Sybase is pretty good about forward and backward compatibility between servers and clients.  Obviously, when you use a client older than the server, you potentially lose features.  For instance, the BIGINT 64 bit data type in 15 will not be available to a 12.5.x client.  A 12.5.0 client will not handle VARCHAR fields longer than 255 characters as that feature was introduced in 12.5.1.  You get the idea.

Thanks for the help until we find a better solution we will go with mix of 12.5 on the client and 15 on the server.

Thanks again.
