javascript How best to close current web page and return to filtered web page

Unfortunately I'm working on a Classic ASP project.  In it i call a web page from a link on another page.  The calling page is a table view that has been filtered.  When I'm done with the called page, I want to return to the calling page with the filter intact.  I have created a button to close the page and wanted to use a javascript function to do the "dasterly deed".

What is the best way to do this?

How about having the called paged be displayed, and the calling page be minimized.  Then, you might be able to add some javascript code on the "popup" page to restore focus to the calling page?

I wonder if you could, instead, have the called page contents "hide" the contents of the calling page.  Then, when the "close" request occurs, have the the unload routine discard the called data, and restore the original (background) page...
