embed text in picture file

Is it possible to embed text into a picture file.  We have a lot of projects and take pictures for documentation.  It would be nice if a method was available to embed some documentation into the file.  Not necessarily for display, but somewhere hidden in the header that could only be read by an application.  If I take a picture at Job site A.  Then I would like to be able to document the pic by adding the: Time, Date, location, conditions ..., Job Number.

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for, but if you right click on the picture file, click on "Properties" then select the "Summary" tab

You can enter in information on the image there.

what is the file format you are using?
If you are using TIFF, then you can use tags to add text in to the file. There are lot of standard tags that is being used. time and date is one such standard tag. (you may use http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tifftags/search.html to look for standard tags)
also you can even create private tags. http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/tifftags/private.html
I am not aware of other picture formats, but they too should have a simila mechanism.

Free Tool: Path Explorer

All this is a lot simpler than I thought it would be.   My file type is JPG.  What are the limitations on how much text I can enter ?  Are those tags that are there; Title, Dimension, Camera Type, Time & Date, are these standard tags or just tags created by my camera ?  I noticed that if I hit 'Advanced', a lot more properties show up.  Can I edit the file and create my own property ?

Thanks

It the freeware sw I noted...you can atttach your own file (and format), and add any info you want to it, no limitations on amount of text you want

I looked at the freeware, but that just lets you imbed a file.  I would like to directly add info like rgutwein suggested.  As an extra, I would like to be able to add my own property ?

Thanks

Ok then the only other way is to add to the metadata in the image file. The properties window with the different tabs is a OS function.
So here is another free tool that does a pretty good job adding a lot of data to an image metadata...Microsoft Pro Photo Tools 2. You cannot add your own catagories, but it meets your initial requirements "somewhere hidden in the header that could only be read by an application"....hope it works for you :)
