sccm remote control prompting for credentials

We have several machines in our SCCM environment that are giving us fits.  When we try to remote control the clients it will prompt us for credentials.  We have tried removing the clients and re-installing and some oother steps to fix but continue to have the probilems.  Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.  We did not upgrade from sms, rather it was a fresh install of sccm after using Zenworks for several years.  I will be glad to dig for the resolution but am not sure where to start.

Under the account you are using, is it apart of the remote viewers group in SCCM?
Is the account you are using in the local administrators group of the target PC?

yes to both.....as a side note when we do try to remote these clients that are giving us the trouble it prompts for credntials.  When we put in the correct credentials it still gives us an access denied message
Hmm...what does C:\windows\system32\ccm\Logs\RemoteControl.log show for error messages?
Can you get to \\targetpc\admin$ without any errors?

attached is remotecontrol.log and yes I can get to \\targetpc\admin$ with no problems

That's completely strange.  That log should show connection attempts made.
If you launch the CCM client on the workstation, click on the components tab.  Is the ConfigMgr Remote Tools Agent enabled?
If this is an XP box, is there a ConfigMgr Remote Control Driver listed in Device Manager under Disply Adaptors?
I would temp. disable the firewall if one is enabled on the target PC

I suspect that rcagent.exe is being blocked by your client firewall, at least for the second system.

I checked both systems...windows firewall is disabled on both and I also checked NTFS permissions on rcagent.exe which the administrators group which I am a part of has rights.

remote control display adapter is missing on one of the systems.  I am looking into that now and checking other systems.
The adapter won't be on Vista systems, only XP/2000.

Perhaps others will chime in...

some of the other systems do have the config mgr remote control adapter listed and I still get prompted for credentials on these machines.  Not sure what to do next.
Does RDP work to the boxes?  RDP works on port 3389: RCAGENT works on  ports 2701/2702.  The underlying protocol that the SCCM agent uses is RDP, so if straight up RDP works that would sound like a network issue (port blocking) to me.
Avatar of wano81

ASKER

yes RDP works just fine
You have me stumped.  We have over 900 SCCM clients here and I'm not seeing that issue on any of them.  I suspect that it something within the image on those computers is interfering with RCAGENT.  You said you had Zenworks...it is possible that some part of Zenwork is still listening on those ports.  There was a remote agent available in Zenworks...it is possible that if parts of that agent are still left on the workstations it could be interfering with the SCCM agent.
There use to be a Novell cleaner utility available at novell.com, but I haven't touched Novell in years.  You might want to check to see if you can scrub these workstations down completely of Novell components.

That's bizarre.  I did have an issue where one of the techs responisble for our desktop images disabled the removable storage service and this caused the sms client to stop working for that specific image.  After we compared the services list from the 3 different images we had, we narrowed it down to that service.
I did look through a sample ccmsetup.log and supposedly it does setup DCOM security as part of the setup:
MSI: Action 13:21:43: CcmConfigDCOM. Configuring service
Good job on finding the issue!
It was the RCagent in my case, changing the permissions on that allowed remote access.
