I am using a PIX Firewall with a cisco client to set up a VPN.  I can connect to the remote firewall with the client and it obtains an IP address from the remote network.  But the internet connection on the client stops working, I can't ping my local gateway, and all access to network resources stop.

Your firewall administrator probably disallowed split tunneling.

This is by design usually.  Talk to your firewall admin about enabling split tunneling on the PIX.

If this is the VPN client and not the Anyconnect client, you can check to see if you have the ability to turn off the stateful firewall in the client software.    You should also be able to right click on the client icon in the icon try and disable it there.    When the Stateful firewall is enabled, only the VPN traffic is allowed out.

It was a split tunneling issue.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
