extract to xml + Connection pooling

i want to design a utility where two parameters could be passed at start i.e 1 load  2: extract

in case of load i need to connect to db by reading name mentioned in the config file and list of table also in config file. i want to query these tables from the above db and store the data and metadata in form of xml and write to disk.
please provide me with some sample code if u have any and also a sample code for connection pool singleton sample code is really required.
please guide and give some sample or working code files to help me get started

    i cant use dbunit.........i have to code all in java ...please suggest how connection pooling can be done and i dont have a app server to handle this,i will be a simple java program calling the util.

    please give your expert advice how the same could be done
