We have a client who has had a new gigabit switch installed and we are having some major speed issues with it at least once a day.

The switch is a Netgear GS748T 48 port Switch, we have almost filled the switch with devices including over 20x xp based workstations, 1x SBS 2003 server, 2x Fujitsu-Siemens Fibrecat NAS and 5 or more network printers.

The network will run fine for up to 24 hours then the network speeds will slow to the point where accessing the server shares is almost impossible and ping rates to all network devices go from a happy <1ms to 300-700ms.

There have been able to get round the problem by reseting the switch or sometimes we have to reboot all the pc's!

I have called netgear and they have replaced the switch twice whch has fixed the problem for a while but it comes back.

We have performed a spyware check on the server and all the PC's on site which have found nothing and they have ESET ativirus which is up to date on all pc's and servers.

What does the network traffic look like when the slow down occurs? Are there large amounts of traffic?

If so, it could be a broadcast storm resulting from a loop.

Well before netgear washed their hand of me I was advised to run wireshark for a bit to try and get some info of what was going on during the slow down, here is the log (.pcap file has been renamed to .txt) This log was gathered from the SBS server.

Doesn't look like a broadcast storm. All the packets are unique and the captured traffic is only about 2mbps.

It could be a memory leak...have you tried upgrading the switch software?

the latest version of firmware is runnig on the switch.  We are now thinking of replacing the 48 port switch with 2 24 port switches.
