Looking for systems inventory software

I would like to receive feedback about people's experiences in using software that compiles system inventories. I'm looking for software that has the following attributes:

1. Runs on Windows 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, from XP upwards
2. Is capable of inventorising the hardware of an x86 or x64 system
3. Is capable of inventorising as wide a range as possible of software installed on the operating system
4. Is low cost or free. By low cost, I mean that I would like the per-node cost to be less than ¬9 per node.

Sorry, the cost should have shown 9 euro per node.

Spiceworks is a great free utility that scans your hardware over the network.  Keeps inventory and does much much more.

It will tell you the software installed as long as the settings permit, this is all done through snmp

I apologise for the delay in replying. I have been submerged in project work and have been unable to find some quiet time to revert.

My thanks go to both of you, JDominguezNY and uetian1707. I think that I should find what I need in your suggestions. I am increasing the points allocated and dividing them between you with a majority going to uetian1707 in recognition of the numerous suggestions.
