How do I use an AVAYA s8700 or S8300 as the TFTP server for the IP phones?

I have a few hundred 4610 IP phones spread across the country now, with a s8700 phone switch. We have 3 LSP gateways that are all s8300 switches. We currently have a computer at each switch to act as a TFTP server for that region. However that is becoming a hassle as windows needs to be rebooted once a week, and the TFTP app Avaya provides likes to hang. I have been looking thru the AVAYA documentation and the management pages of each switch and have found that there is a section for the IP phone management: how can the s8300 LSP nodes become my TFTP servers?

This is the text of the info on the page I am on in the s830 management:

"The IP Telephone Configuration Application allows you to create and edit 46xxsettings.txt file that allows you to specify custom settings for your IP Telephones.

Download the appropriate files necessary to operate your IP Telephones before you install a new IP Telephone or upgrade an existing telephone. You can do that by clicking on the Download Files link on the left. If you have done that already, you may click on the Phone Settings... button to go to the IP Telephone Configuration Page.

If you haven't downloaded the files, clicking on Phone Settings... button will result in object not found error."

When I go to the help button I get this:

"The IP Telephone Configuration Application lets you save custom settings for your IP (Internet Protocol) phones. Create, edit, and save settings in a configuration data file (46xxsettings.txt file) supplied by the system.
Note:  Files used to operate your IP phones must be downloaded before you install a new IP telephone or upgrade an existing telephone.  Follow the instructions at Download Files.

Click Phone Settings to go to the IP Telephone Configuration page.
Release 4.0 August 2007"

any help would be great.

Thanx

It can be done, or so I understand.  But its a pain, I would advise you to use the Avaya IPTel TFTP Server found here...  http://support.avaya.com/japple/css/japple?temp.documentID=126001&temp.productID=107658&temp.bucketID=108025&PAGE=Document
Much better solution, more configurable and stable.

That is what I am using now, but with windows updates and our server group, the machines get rebooted, and never log in properly, so thet TFTP serve is always down. I was looking for how to have the phone switch do it as that is always up when the phones are up.

Like I said, I think it can be done but I have never heard of anyone doing it successfully.

If you want to auto login the pc's (assuming win xp pro) click start then run and type 'control userpasswords2'. Turn off the password required option, type in the user password and click ok.

This will auto login the user for the tftp server, you can then have the tftp server start from the startup items folder.

That is what we are currently doing, and it works most of the time. However when it does not we end up with issues of phones that will not work (non-avaya SIP that need to load their BIN files at start up). Thus I was looking for how to host the files on the S8300 and S8700.

If youa re completely married to the idea of using the S8XXX as your TFTP Server you are prolly gonna want to contact an Avaya Business Partner as it is a buggy instalation and there's no clearly defines path to the install.

you cannot use s8300 as your tftp sorry man, you can use it as HTTP server though. For small sites, I have install HTTP server on s8300x and have all my phones pull it from there.

download RPM package from here http://support.avaya.com/japple/css/japple?temp.documentID=366586&temp.productID=107755&temp.bucketID=108025&PAGE=Document
then click install on your download page .  This will allow you to go to another page when you click on phone settings.

but to me if you really want to go with s8300 tftp , then you have to configure your g350 , g450 as tftp server. this is better if you don't have LSP installed. You can put your 46xxsettings.txt and phone firmware on g350 , g450.

I suggest you don't try it with CM 2.2 though , had quite bad experiences in the past.  CM3,4,5 is fine go ahead

i'm ACE but my salary is equal to a maid! go figure. if i answer your question , give me some points man i'm a noob here!

I am using CM 4. So you suggest it is doable, but prefer the HTTP version for small LSP sites? (just trying to clarify what you are saying).

If so our LSP sites are 15 to 40 uses. Is that small in your view?

yes it's doable, go ahead. HTTP is much better and recommended.  But you also need tftp for upgrading 4690 sets. It always come with early firmware that only support tftp

max users I have for s8300 standalone + Audix+ SIP +  HTTP is 300 i think. still no problem

don't forget to turn on your firewall setting on the firewall page.
