HP Storageworks MSL6000 and Backup Exec 12.5 SP1 problems

I am running Backup Exec 12.5 SP1 (BE) and use an HP MSL6000 Robotic library. BE sees the library and all the tapes and the communication between the two seem fine. The problem is that no matter what tapes I put in the tape library, BE seems to think they are all cleaning tapes. It actually reads the tapes as DLT CLN instead of the SuperDLT's that I am using.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get BE to register the tapes so I can start backing up to them?

This is generally a hardware problem. Check cables. Check terminator. Call HP.

Also make sure to download the latest Symantec device driver package from

I have called HP. They don't think it is a hardware problem. I reverted the drivers from 1.26 to 1.24 for my SCSI card at their request and also changed the Medium changer drivers to the windows generic driver (Why windows works better than HP I don't know but that is what they said...) All diagnostics and tests on the hardware come back passed. Last resort before switching the hardware is trying a different brand of SDLT II tape. I have them ordered and will post what result I get from them.

Oh, the tapes I am using right now are Maxell SDLT II tapes. I have bought HP's tapes.

After spending two weeks of troubleshooting the library, HP says that it is a malfunction with the drive. HP is going to send a technician out to replace the drive. I will keep this updated and award points once the problem is resolved. Your reply was helpful honmapog :)

Drive was replaced and the tape library is now working :)
